Join the Department of History at Case Western Reserve University’s College of Arts and Sciences for an informal talk and light supper with prize-winning history professor Gillian Weiss, PhD, sponsored by History Associates of CWRU.

Enslaved Muslims in Louis XIV’s France and a 21st Century Museum

Professor Weiss will take us back to 17th century France and Louis XIV’s Mediterranean empire. Her exciting research focuses on a previously unexplored aspect of the Sun King’s operations—slavery. She will also share a preview of a special exhibit on enslaved Muslims in Europe during the Age of Enlightenment, scheduled to open in Paris in April 2026.

Gillian Weiss, PhD, a professor of history at Case Western Reserve University, is co-author of The Sun King at Sea: Maritime Art and Galley Slavery in Louis XIV’s France, which has earned three prestigious international prizes. She also authored Captives and Corsairs: France and Slavery in the Early Modern Mediterranean in 2011. Weiss is currently co-organizing a 2026 exhibition at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris on slavery in Europe during the Age of Enlightenment.
